Mayapur temples: Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birthplace and Masir Bari

Mayapur, about 130 km from Kolkata, is a pilgrimage town in West Bengal that draws people from around the world who come here to connect with the spiritual energy of the place where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born. Regarded by his followers as an incarnation of Lord Krishna, the 15th-century saint taught a universal message of devotion that continues to resonate with millions globally even today.

Located a short distance from the global headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) are two temple complexes: Yogapith – the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Chaitanya Math – popularly known locally as Masir Bari (maternal aunt’s house), which are must-visit sites to understand the spiritual essence of Mayapur.

Yogapith – Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birthplace

Yogapith: The main temple

The founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, was born in 1486. His parents were Jagannath Mishra and Sachi Devi, and his original name was Vishvambhar Mishra. He was, however, lovingly called Nimai as he was born under a Neem tree, and also Gauranga because of his fair, golden complexion.

After entering the Yogapith temple complex, towards the right is the sacred water tank called Gaur Kunda, teeming with multi-coloured fish.

On the left is the main temple, which has beautiful idols of Shri Krishna, Radha, Sri Chaitanya and his wives (Lakshmipriya and Vishnupriya). We were happy to see packed prasad was available here, which we bought to distribute among family members.

Exiting the temple, we further walked inside the complex and saw the neem tree that marks the holy spot where Sri Chaitanya was born. Next to the tree is a mud hut which is a recreation of his parent’s home. It was wonderful to see the statues of young Nimai with his parents inside this unique temple.

Just behind is a small Shiva temple that has two Shivlingas – of Gopishvara Shiva and Ksetrapala Shiva. The latter is known to be the protector of the sacred place.

A little ahead is the temple of Gaura-Gadadhara and Laksmi Narashima Deva. I felt almost mesmerised by the unusual and beautiful blue vigrah of Narasimha Deva with Maa Lakshmi, and could tangibly feel the powerful and calming energy of the place.

Sri Chaitanya Math – Masir Bari

The parent headquarters of global Gaudiya Math missions, Sri Chaitanya Math, was established in 1918 by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, on the historic site of Mahaprabhu’s Masir Bari (maternal aunt’s house). It was the residence of Chandrasekhara Acharya, who was married to Sachi Devi’s sister.

The vast complex has a lot of spiritual and historical significance, as it is believed that this is where Mahaprabhu and his disciples enacted many divine plays on the lilas in Vrindavan. The area is also called Vrajapattana (The Manifestation of Vrindavan). Pilgrims can see replicas of sites like Govardhan mountain, along with the sacred ponds of Syama Kunda and Radha Kunda.

There are many temples in the complex. Adhivarahan Saraswat Natya Mandir has beautiful murals depicting Mahaprabhu’s life and times. Sri Chaitanya Lila Exhibition also has a vast pictorial repository of his lifetime.

For every pilgrim, one of the highlights is the beautiful statue of Sri Chaitanya’s six-armed form (Ṣaḍ-bhuja-mūrti). While the two upper hands holding the bow and arrow represent Lord Rama; Lord Krishna is represented holding the flute with two middle hands, while the lower hands holding the staff of a Sanyasi and water-pot is Mahaprabhu himself.

There are a few samadhi temples here, the most prominent being that of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. A few stores are also inside, selling Mahaprasad, books, and materials for worship. There is also a library.

Important info:

How to reach:

The drive to Mayapur takes about 3.5 hours from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Other popular options are trains from Howrah Station or Sealdah Station to Nawadwip or Krishnanagar, followed by crossing over by ferry.

Accommodation:

Most people prefer staying in one of the guest houses within the ISKCON complex (Gada Bhavan, Conch Bhavan, Ishodyan Bhavan, and others). A few private hotels are also there. I stayed at Hotel Sonar Bangla Mayapur, which was a beautiful property about 30 minutes drive away.
